I actually carved this little guy the week before I started carving classes. Made of Basswood and painted. My first mistake was to sand the project, now it does not look carved and the second was to over paint. January 2002. This is the second item I carved. Made of Basswood and colored with brown shoe polish which also acts as a preservative on the wood. January 2002.
 Carved from Basswood, he is 7 inches tall. I sealed the project with spray shelac and then colored with acrylic paint. Cowboy figures appeal to most everyone. These western characters represent rugged individuals. The body and face lend themsleves to rather gross exageration. Charlie's bowed legs give the impression that he has spent most of his life in the saddle. February 2002. This little guy is only 2 1/2 inches tall, carved from basswood and sealed with a spray shelac. - February 2002. This was just a class project. The wood was sealed and then I applied a little antiquing solution. He is about 5 inches tall and carved from Basswood. - Feb. 2002.

#6 & #7 - This couple are 6 1/2 inches tall, carved from Basswood and painted with acrylic paint. Chief Toquer was the name of an Indian who was leader of a tribe in Southern Utah. Toquerville is a unique community near Zion National Park, and derives it's name from this colourful Indian Chief. Princess Toquerina is his wife. It is thought she changed her name to identify with the chief. - March 2002. This little puppy is 5 1/2 inches tall. Carved from basswood and sealed with spray shellac. Minimum painting on this one. March 2002. A little over 7 inches tall, he is carved from basswood and lightly painted. He is a little shy about his urge. April 2002. 11.htm The large spoon is 9 inches long and the small one is 4.25 inches. Bothe are carved from butternut wood. The big one is finished with varathane and the small one with floor wax. #17 & 18 - The single turtle was carved our of a 3 inch long piece of pine and the double turtles also on a 3 inclh long piece of wood but I used basswood for them. - June 2002. #19 - This little guy is carved from cottonwood and stands about 6 1/2 inches tall. June 2002 This is one of my better and most incricate jobs. The little cowboy is about 5 inches tall and sits on the tailgate of a truck. The cowboy is made of basswood and painted with acrylic paint. The truck is made from a variety of woods cut with a scroll saw, pieces glued and painted with acrylics. July, 2002. This is merely a different variation of the first santa but he is 2.66 times larger. That meant a lot more basswood and a lot more paint. He stands 11.5 inches tall. August 2002. Ski Santa is lost and looking up at the stars to find his direction. He is about 4 1/2 inches tall, carved from cottonwood, painted with acrylics and finished with clear floor polish. Aug 2002. This is a little different. Carved from carragana and finished with clear satin varathane. The color natural. August 2002. August 2002 - I carved this one from Cottonwood and finished it with acrilyc paints and then with clear floor polish. He is about 6 inches long and 4 inches high. I was asked to make some missing chess pieces. The originals are on either side and are made of marble. The ones I carved from basswood are on the inside. There was no large white piece to use as a sample so I used the red one but what was needed was a white one made exaclty the same except for the color.

#30A, 30B, 30C and 31 - The 3 small ones (4.5 inches) are cottonwood and the larger one (5.5 inches) is basswood. All are painted with acrylic paint and each has a different hand position. Sept 2002. Dec, 2002. Carved from basswood, he is only 3/4 inch thick and about 1 1/2 inches high. He is destined to hang in our Xmas tree. Became one of a set of 4 Feb 2003. This little bear can stand on his front feet with his nose on the ground and when given a little nudge, rolls forward until he lands on his feet. Carved from basswood, painted with acrylic, protected with floor wax, he stands about 4 1/2 inches tall. Feb 2003 - The boots are 100%, 87.5% and 75% in size. These 4 carvings span about 5 months of time since I did the first one (#50 above). They are the same as the picture on a Xmas mat that Irene puts in the bathroom at Xmas time. Sep 2004 - Jock MacFore . This little guy was carved at a 4 day carving session with Eldon Humphries, a master carver from Guelph Ontario. I learned a lot of new technicques on this one. He is about 8 inches tall, colored with acrylic paints and finished with double boiled linseed oil. Sep 2004 - I made one just like this in September 2003. Same size etc as #102. He stands 5 inches tall. He is carved from basswood and painted with acrylics. The only difference is this one is finished with double boiled linseed oil. Sep. 2004 - The Scandinavian carving method is more crude than ours and I had a hard time leaving a few square edges. Was too tempted to round them out. 6 inches tall, carved from basswood, painted with acrylics and finished with double boiled linseed oil. Dec 2004 - This is a three part carving. Santa, Momma and the base. Santa is holding a mistletoe over his head to tease momma. Jan 2005 - I carved this caricature because it is a little different. He stands 7 inches tall, carved from basswood and painted with acrylics. He will likely end up on a little base. Feb 2005 - After seeing a few of these at my carving meetings, I decided to try it. This thing is about 20 inches tall and 5 inches wide at the top. Windows are carved right through. These 4 turtles are from the same design but are all progressively smaller with the largest being about 5 inches in diameter and the smallest about 2 1/2 inches. Carved from basswood and finished with acrylic paint then floor paste wax to preserve. This is just a different shot of the same turtles as #151. Sept. 2005 - A little larger than the first one. Sep. 2005 - Oskar and Sara were the first in their Scandinavian community to immigrate to America. After a stormy crossing and a seemingly endless train ride, they arrived at their new home, a recently settled community in Minnesota. Jan 2006 - Irish Leprechans are about 6 inches tall, painted with acrylics and finished with double boiled linseed oil. Feb - 2006 - I received a good sized piece of Apple wood several years ago but when I tried to carve it then, it was not dry enough. This carving is about 11 inches tall, 4 inches wide and much heavier than the Poplar Bark I usually use for this. May 2006 - This stylized stretching cat is carved from willow, sanded and finished with 3 coats of laquer and one coat of paste wax. He measures about 5 inches long and 3 inches high.

The flying angel is carved from basswood, finished with acrylics and stands about 7 inches tall but it will be position on a 12 inch dowel so it appears to be flying above the stable. The large ribbon the angel is holding is made from a thin piece of copper and text painted with acrylics. August 2006 - This is the fifth piece of the 15 piece nativity scene. The kneeling angel is carved from basswood, finished with acrylics and stands about 5 1/2 inches tall.

He carries gold. September 2006 - This is the nineth piece of the 15 piece nativity scene. The camel is carved from basswood, finished with acrylics and stands about 5 inches tall and 7 inches long. October 2006 - This is the tenth piece of the 15 piece nativity scene. The shepherd is carved from basswood, finished with acrylics and is about 5 inches tall.

November 2006 - This is the twelfth piece of the 15 piece nativity scene. The lamb is carved from basswood, finished with acrylics and is about 2 inches tall and 4 inches long. November 2006 - This is the thirteenth piece of the 15 piece nativity scene. The donkey is carved from basswood, finished with acrylics and is about3 inches tall and 5 inches long. November 2006 - This is the fourteenth piece of the 15 piece nativity scene. The ox is carved from basswood, finished with acrylics and is about3 inches tall and 5 inches long. The horns are carved from White Tail Deer antler.

Dec 2006 - The finished Nativity Set. The 15th piece is the stable. It is made out of some scrap wood I had lying around and I used a small chisel to carve out a whole bunch of gouges to make the wood look old. Dec 2006 - This little angel stands about 6 inches tall and carved from basswood. I chose not to paint this one to see how it would turn out. June 2007 - This is carved from a picture of my daughter's little Bichon dog. The carving stands about 5 inches high and 8 inches long. He measures about 3 inches long and 2 inches tall. May 2007 - This Wood Spirit is carved from Poplar Bark and he is about 12 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide. Finished with laquer he looks pretty good.

Oct 2007 - This Wood Spirit is carved from Poplar Bark and he is about 13 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide. I got the Viking idea out of a magazine. Jan 2008 - This is the third one of these carvings I have done. Like the first one (#140) and the second one (#171) this little guy is about 7.5" tall, all carved from basswood and painted with acrylics. The difference is that I used one piece of maple laminate for the floor and this time the coat rack is white with red. Feb 2009 - While on vacation in Cuba, I found a piece of drift wood and while we sat on the beach, I carved this little guy. He is about 12 inches tall. Aug 2009 - This whimsical tree house is carved all around so there is something to see no matter which way it is turned. This carving was inspired by the work of one of my fellow Wednesday morning carvers. It stands 9 inches tall, is hollow and has a balcony on the top. Dec 2009 - This happy little Santa ornament is carved from Basswood and painted with acrylic paint. He measures 7" tall.

April 2010 - This is carved from poplar bark and measures about 21" tall. April 2010- This is a small stylized pig that I carved out of a small piece of oak hardwood I had kicking around. He measures about 3 inches long and 2 inches tall and is part of a series of small stylized animals I've carved. Sep 2010 - This is a 7 inch hand carved bowl. The wood is willow and because it had very little color, I added a splash of acrylic paints. The inspiration for this one came from Wood Carving Illustrated. Because I am not completely happy with the result, it is very unlikely I will carve another one but will stick to my caricatures which I enjoy making. November 2010 - This little elf stands 7 inches tall and is carved from basswood with acrylic paint finish. July 2011 - This shelf bracket is 7" high and 4.5" long. It was carved to hold up a shelf for displaying some of my carvings in my garage. Carved from basswood and finished with acrylic paints.

October 2011 - This is the whole Nativity Scene that includes pieces 230 to 247 listed and described before. November 2011 - I started carving this little guy a couple years ago and for some reason I put it down and never got back to it. I carved it out of a large piece of willow given to me by a friend and my pattern was a picture of my daughter's little French Poodle, Chico who has since passed away so this will be sort of a memorial to Chico who was about 5 years old. The wood was almost the same color as Chico so I didn't have to do much painting but did apply a light wash of acrylic paint and then sealed it with clear carnoba floor wax. He stands about 7.5 inches tall and is about 7.5 inches long. November 2011 - This is just a picture of the finished carving with an inset of the picture I used for a pattern.
